Posted by Kay Gourley on Wednesday Nov 23, 2011 Under The Lost BrothersThere have been great reports on the Other Voices concert, which took place in Le Poisson Rouge, New York recently under the baton of producer Philip King. We’ve heard whispers that The Lost Brothers did especially well, winning friends and hopefully influencing people with their wonderful folk-pop sound. They were up against stiff competition. Glen Hansard covered Bob Dylan’s ‘When I Paint My Masterpiece’ and was joined onstage by Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman). The magisterial Martha Wainwright performed her mother Kate McGarrigle’s beautiful and brilliant ‘Talk To Me of Mendocino’ as well as ‘Tell My Sister’. Gabriel Byrne read a William Butler Yeats poem. Colum McCann, Paul Muldoon and Roddy Doyle read from their own work. Laurie Anderson, accompanied by her husband Lou Reed, did a fine turn. And Damien Rice came along unannounced and sang without the PA to an enchanted room. It was that kind of evening…
Incidentally, Thomas Bartlett is a fascinating character. As a solo artist, he supported Swell Season on their last US tour. But he has also worked with Antony and the Johnsons, as well as David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono and Martha Wainwright. Bartlett is currently working with Glen Hansard on the material for the musical version of Once, which promises to be a huge success. But first there is the small matter of adapting the film and the music for the stage! We’ll keep you posted…
Back to The Lost Brothers: the outfit’s debut album is out this week, and is likely to be followed by a second album produced by the legendary Brendan Benson, and already in the can, which will likely get a release in the Spring in the US. These guys could explode very soon – get wise to it now…
